Safe Pregnancy-Foods and other things to avoid

  • Nursery & Kids Wall Art Prints by Simone Novelette Designs

  •

It is essential that you take care when preparing foods and avoid doing certain things when pregnant. This is due to your baby’s immune system not being sufficiently developed to fight any infection you may pass to it while in the womb. It is also believed that a woman’s immune system may not function at its peak during pregnancy so it is essential that all necessary precautions be taken.

    Pets
If you have a pet every time you come into contact with them you should wash your hands thoroughly.Pets can pass on harmful bacteria that may be present in their feces. You may inadvertently become infected with this by touching your mouth or other parts of your body and this may in turn infect your unborn child.

Cats are of particular importance due to toxoplasmosis found within their feces. If you have a cat that uses a litter tray it is important that someone else carries out the task of emptying the litter tray task, if this is not possible then you should wear rubber gloves and a face mask to prevent any bacteria being passed to you. This also applies to gardening when fecal matter can be found in the soil. Again, wear gloves and wash your hands as soon as possible after finishing.

    Listeria

This is a bacteria which develops into an illness called listeriosis. The symptoms of this are mild flu, aches and pains, sore throat and high temperatures. In the more serious of cases this can cause septicemia and meningitis in unborn babies. This is the worst case scenario. In some cases many people are not aware they have caught the bacteria as they do not show any of the above symptoms. During pregnancy, mothers have to be aware of certain foods where this bacteria may be prevalent.

    Pain relief during labor

  •

Giving birth is rightly regarded as an extremely uncomfortable and painful experience for many mothers, and while for some women labor goes quickly and relatively easily, for others it can turn into a real ordeal. Where our grandmothers had to go through the pain barrier more or less unaided, there are quite a few options available for today’s pregnant women that can lessen or even completely remove the pain, allowing the joyfulness of giving birth a much greater chance to be appreciated.

    – Birthing Pool

Being in water during the early stages of labor can greatly relieve the contraction pains in some women, as the buoyancy takes some of the pressure off the muscles of the lower back. Some women prefer to stay in the water right through to the later stages of labor, and some even choose to complete the birth in a birthing pool.

Birthing pools have become increasingly popular in recent years, as they are seen as a natural way of reducing pain, in line with today’s widespread preference for keeping things simple and as close to nature as possible.

    – TENS

A TENS machine is a small electronic device which you attach to your lower back with electrode pads. The machine passes a very slight electric current through the pads, which is intended to interfere with the pain signals, reducing the extent of the discomfort. The level of current can usually be increased during contractions, and then lowered back down as the pain subsides again. Some women find TENS machines to be highly effective, while for others the effect is minimal. The devices can usually be hired from the hospital, but are relatively cheap to buy yourself if you want to be sure that one will be available.

    – Gas and Air

This is also known as entonox, and is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen that is breathed in via a pipe whenever the mother-to-be feels the need. It is a very light method of pain relief, and is enough on it’s own for some women, especially in straightforward births. The effect is more of a distraction from the pain than an actual reduction, but doesn’t feature the drawbacks of the two more heavy-duty pain relief drugs below.

How to choose a pediatrician for your child

  •

Caring for your child will naturally be one of your biggest concerns, so let us talk a little about how you can choose a good pediatrician for your baby. Here is what to look out for when choosing your pediatrician:

    • Find a doctor who has a nice personality and communication style.Finding a doctor that is patient and listens to all your concerns is very important. Try and start the search for selecting your pediatrician ahead of your baby’s birth.

    • Ensure that that pediatrician’s office has a good staff – remember that your baby will spend time with nurses, medical assistants, and other support staff. When you go to the office look at how the place is set up.The atmosphere and way the staff dresses can be indicators of the type of place it is.

    Painting activity for toddlers

  •

Keeping a toddler active and developing their mind is key. However, there are some cases when a parent is going to be at a loss as to what they can do for their toddler. This is when they should use some steps for preparing for a toddler painting activity. By using these steps it will be easy for the parents to get an activity together for the kids and know they are going to have a great time doing the activity, but also learn at the same time.

    1. Prepare the materials that you will need for your toddler to do the painting activity. This is going to include finding paint that they can either use with a brush, if they are older or finger paints. You should also have newspaper or something else to protect the painting area. In addition to the paint, you need to make sure you get some type of medium for the kids to paint on. This is usually going to be paper, but if you want and if the kids are using brushes it may even be pieces of wood that they are painting.

    2. Have water and other cleaning supplies ready in case their is a mess that the toddler creates. Although, any parent knows that a toddler never makes any messes at all.

    3. Put the paints that you have gathered onto something separate like a pallet. By doing this you will still have paint left over after the activity, but if the toddler decides to mix the colors they will not ruin the entire paint set.

    Reading activity for toddlers

  •

Getting your young child ready to read doesn’t have to only involve sitting with him and teaching him how to sound out the words.  Your child can also learn through fun activities, games, and crafts, both with you and on his own.  Here is an easy and fun preschooler reading activity that your child can do all by himself or with your help with just a little preparation from you:

    1. Go through any magazines, flyers, or advertisements you have, and cut out any images of colorful objects.  Try to choose objects that start with easy letter/sound combinations (avoid words that start with “ph” or other letters that may look different than they sound to a beginning reader). Be sure to have several objects for each starting letter (several objects that start with “a”, several that start with “b”, etc.).

    2. Take 26 pieces of paper, or pieces of colored construction paper, and write
a letter on each, both in upper case and lower case (“Aa” on the first, “Bb” on the second, and so on). Write this in the upper left corner so that you leave plenty of space on the rest of the paper for the child to glue the objects.

    3. Give your child some school glue (or, to avoid mess, try a glue stick), and a bowl or envelope full of the cut out images of objects. Spread the letter papers out on a table, in alphabetical order.

  • Nursery & Kids Wall Art Prints by Simone Novelette Designs

  •

Colic is a puzzle, which has not been solved as yet. There is no one thing that generates it, and there is no “one size fits all” treatment for it. This means that if your baby is colicky, it can be very frustrating. The good thing though, is that colic stops in due course. But having a wailing baby is hard to deal with at the best of times,

Given below are a few points that several parents have found  to be of useful in either making a colicky baby sleep, or at the most lessen the intensity of the wailing.

Choosing the right formula for your baby

  • Nursery & Kids Wall Art Prints by Simone Novelette Designs

  •

If you’ve decided on using formula for feeding your baby, you might be a bit confused about all the choices. There are lots of options when it comes to choosing the right formula, some will be discussed in this article.

When you are in the hospital, if your baby is getting formula, it will likely be pre-mixed in one serving disposable bottles, and will be a name brand, milk based formula. This is likely to be what your pediatrician recommends and will work well for most babies. You may be able to use this for the whole first year, with no issues.

If your baby has trouble with this formula, he may have a milk allergy, and may need soy, or other special type of formula. If your baby is having trouble tolerating his formula, he may cry significantly after eating, indicating that he has a stomach ache or he may throw up or have diarrhea. If you notice what you think might be intolerance to the formula, contact your pediatrician right away. You might have to experiment with a few before you find the right one, but don’t lose hope. There is a formula out there that will work well for your baby.

    The terrible two’s

  • Nursery & Kids Wall Art Prints by Simone Novelette Designs

  •

The “Terrible Twos” is really an unfortunate term. It tends to set parents up to be apprehensive about their two-year-old, and it also may cause parents to worry unnecessarily when “Terrible Twos” behavior manifests when their child is three, four, or five years old.

Regardless of the age, there are some strategies out there for keeping that kind of behavior – temper tantrums, screaming, etc. – from becoming completely out of control. Here are some tips.

    Facing Toddler Fears

  • Nursery & Kids Wall Art Prints by Simone Novelette Designs

  •

Toddlers are notorious for experiencing irrational fears. This can get annoying for parents, who have a hard time getting their toddlers to understand that such fears have no basis. What can you do? Here are some tips that may help.

    Don’t Blow It Off

It’s easy to be dismissive about your toddler’s fears. After all, you know there’s nothing to be afraid of; it’s tempting to roll your eyes and tell her to forget it. But experts do not recommend this approach, claiming it may make your toddler feel like you don’t care, or that she needs to suppress her fears. It’s important to let your toddler know that communicating her fears and asking for help is a healthy thing to do.

    Don’t Blow It Up Either!

While taking your toddler’s fears seriously and acknowledging them are important, taking them too seriously may actually make the fear worse.
